Planetary Boundaries
Planetary boundaries are the limits we need to live within as a species to maintain the health of the earth. They can be quantified for climate change or for biodiversity or for any of the other impacts we have on our planet. There are measurable budgets of CO2 or Nitrogen or Land use areas or any of our other impacts that take us up to or past our planetary boundaries.
From planetary to personal
We want to translate those boundaries down to a personal scale by sharing the quotas for each boundary equally between every person on earth today. Then, as individuals, we can see if our lifestyles help keep the earth as a liveable place or if they are destroying our planet.
We'd like to make these personal budgets easy to use in day to day life so that it becomes second nature to budget for the planet as well as our households. As a start, we have focused on our personal carbon budgets and want to make an app that enables tracking our personal carbon as simple as possible. In future, we hope to extend the app to encompass other boundaries such as biodiversity, water, pollutants etc. |
